WHO IS JANPAP?

WHAT MAKES JANPAP SPECIAL?

Janpap is a super maize meal which has been milled by experts to match the particular taste of South African braai fans. Janpap, which is suitable for vegetarians, should be an essential part of a balanced diet because it is:

  3. low in fat

MICROWAVE FLUFFED JANPAP

Serves 4

Preparation time 20 min


Ingredients

  • 1 cup Janpap Braaipap
  • 2 cups hot water
  • Salt
  • Butter

Preparation

  1. Add Janpap, salt and 1 cup hot water to a microwave safe bowl, cook for 2 min on high.
  2. Add 2nd cup water and remove lumps. Stir and cook for 2 min.
  3. Add butter and cook for 2 min.
  4. Repeat twice.
  5. Take out the microwave and let it steam until it is cold by continuing fluffing until Janpap resembles cous cous.
  6. As easy as that!

JANPAP PUTU

Serves 6 - 8

Preparation time 1 - 1½ hours


Ingredients

  • 2 cups Janpap Braaipap
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt to taste (optional)

Preparation

  1. Bring water and salt to the boil.
  2. Add Janpap. Do not stir; leave the maize in a heap in the centre of the pot. Put on the lid and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Use a two-pronged fork to loosen the pap, but do not stir.
  4. Put the lid back on the pot and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
  5. Loosen the pap every 15 minutes with the fork until it is fully cooked. It should have a crumbly texture.

“STYWE JANPAP”

Serves 4 – 6


Ingredients

  • 2 cups Janpap Braaipap
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Preparation

  1. For best results, first soak Janpap in water for 5 – 10 minutes, then drain the water.
  2. Bring the water and salt to a boil, then add the Janpap while stirring vigorously.
  3. Cook for at least 20 minutes on medium heat, while stirring every 5 minutes. Thereafter, reduce the heat and let it simmer for another 20 minutes or more.
  4. For variety, add butter and/or sweetcorn just before serving.

FLUFFED JANPAP AND ROAST VEG SALAD

Serves 4 - 6

Preparation time 60 min


Ingredients

  • fluffed Janpap Braaipap in microwave
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic (finely chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Rosemary (finely chopped)
  • Thyme (finely chopped)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • A handful of any combination of the following vegetables
  • Baby marrows (sliced)
  • Mushrooms (halved)
  • Baby tomatoes (halved)
  • Baby corn (sliced)
  • Cauliflower (flowers)
  • Broccoli (flowers)
  • Green and Red Peppers

Preparation

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C
  2. Mix the vegetables and place in an oven roasting dish
  3. Mix the garlic, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper through the vegetables, covering them with the oil.
  4. Cover with tin foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the foil and stir the vegetables slowly without breaking them. If they are still undercooked you can put them back into the oven and bake covered for another 15 minutes.
  6. Grill the vegetables in the oven for 15 minutes or until their edges turn dark.
  7. Add the Fluffed Janpap in Microwave and toss together carefully.
  8. Serve hot or cold.

JANPAP (SKRIK-NIE-VIR-‘N-KOUE-PAMPOEN) PAPTERT

Serves 6 - 8


Ingredients

  • 2k Janpap Braaipap
  • 1t sout
  • 3k water
  • 1t droë provensaalse kruie/ mengsel van tiemie, roosmaryn en balsemkruid
  • 1 knoffelhuisie, fyngekap
  • 6 middelslag babamurgpampoentjies
  • 1 kleinerige botterskorsie
  • 1 medium ui, gekap
  • 6e tamatiepasta
  • 4e balsemkruidpesto
  • sout en varsgemaalde swartpeper na smaak
  • 1k cheddar, gerasper
  • 1 wieletjie fetakaas
  • parmesaankrulle en gekapte swart olywe (opsioneel)

Preparation

  1. Voorverhit die oond tot 180°C.
  2. Volg aanwysings op pakkie Janpap, maar voeg die knoffel en kruie by die water.
  3. Sny murgpampoentjies in lengte in kwarte.
  4. Sny botterskorsie in vingerdikte repe (soos aartappelskyfies).
  5. Kook in mikrogolfoond tot net sag.
  6. Smeer oondvaste bak en smeer gaar Janpap eweredig op bodem.
  7. Smeer tamatiepasta eweredig bo-oor.
  8. Doen dieselfde met die pesto.
  9. Sprinkel gerasperde cheddar eweredig bo-oor.
  10. Pak botterskorsie en murgpamoentjievingers bo-op.
  11. Sprinkel gekapte uie, feta en swart olywe bo-oor.
  12. Bak oop in oond totdat kaas gesmelt en goudbruin is.
  13. Strooi parmesaankrulle oor, sny in skywe en dien op.

SAREL SE MIKROGOLF JANPAP


Ingredients

  • 2 koppies Janpap Braaipap
  • 4 koppies water
  • Knypie sout (opsioneel)

Preparation

  1. Kook die water in 'n ketel en gooi in 'n glasbak saam met sout.
  2. Voeg Janpap by en roer goed.
  3. Mikrogolf op hoog vir 3 minute.
  4. Haal uit, roer goed en sit weer in vir 2 minute.
  5. Reg vir eet!

FLUFFED JANPAP GREEN SALAD


Ingredients

  • Make Fluffed Janpap in Microwave
  • Tin of chickpeas
  • 1 chili
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 20 g pine nuts
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • Rocket and baby spinach
  • Fennel

Preparation

  1. Roast pine nuts.
  2. Fry garlic, chillies and chickpeas in olive oil.
  3. Let it cool and mix it all together and serve.
  4. Serve with stew or oxtail.

RISOTTO STYLE MUSHROOM JANPAP


Ingredients

  • 2 cups Janpap Braaipap
  • 2 cubes chicken stock
  • 750ml water
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 x 250g packets brown mushrooms
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese

Preparation

In a big pan

  1. Sauté the finely chopped onions & garlic in olive oil.
  2. Add mushrooms and butter.
  3. Cook until soft and reduce heat.

Bring water to boil in a cast iron or heavy based pot. Dissolve stock.

  1. Add wine, Janpap and stir in.
  2. Bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat (low).
  4. Add mushroom mixture and mix in.
  5. Simmer for approximately 45 minutes or until cooked.
  6. Stir occasionally (once or twice).
  7. Fluff and add Parmesan cheese.

JANPAP KRUMMELPAP

Serves 6 - 8


Ingredients

  • 2 cups Janpap Braaipap
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 heaped tablespoon butter
  • Salt to taste (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (optional)

Preparation

  1. Boil the salt and water in a pot.
  2. Add Janpap to the centre of the boiling water, so that it forms an island in the middle of the pot.
  3. Don’t stir.
  4. Close the lid and let it simmer on low heat for 20 minutes.(Don’t lift the lid or try to peek!)
  5. After 20 minutes, work it through with a two-pronged fork.
  6. Leave your Janpap for another 20 minutes and then stir with the fork until light and crumby.
  7. Stir in the butter and black pepper before it is served.
  8. Janpap, nouprajy!
